Sisters and Brothers,
On November 2nd, we will elect a new Governor. Sometimes we hear, and may even think to ourselves, that
it doesn’t matter who is elected and we should stay out of politics but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Who that Governor is has a huge impact on our day-to-day ability to fight for our rights and to make sure that
we can defend our contracts.
The Governor of Virginia approves legislation that reaches their desk and has a huge influence on what
makes it through the General Assembly. This is true for good and bad legislation. So, It matters who sits in
that chair to enable us to push for legislation that is important to all of us like; protecting our call center jobs,
expanding collective bargaining for our public sector members, putting labor and safety standards for money
spent on broadband that reduces contracting, and providing paid sick days so it is not a fight every time we
bargain. The Governor also controls appointments to various agencies that are tasked with enforcing laws
such as those surrounding safety and health. This ensures that when our brothers and sisters are injured, a
fair investigation is performed. This is the reason that our private sector employers, like Verizon and AT&T
are heavily involved in endorsing candidates and lobbying. They want to gain in the legislature what we beat
back on the picket line.
How you vote is a personal choice. And that decision should not be taken lightly. Please keep in mind that
early voting begins on Friday, September 17th. Please make sure that you and all eligible members of your
family are registered to vote before the October 12th deadline. You can do this online at:
https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation. You can also request a mail-in absentee ballot at the
same link. Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility.
